Standing on the western side of Australia, the city of Perth offers an appealing coastal spot and features a number of notable beaches and superb surfing conditions. Standing alongside the scenic Swan River, central Perth is fairly flat and easy to navigate, being close to the Darling Scarp, a prominent escarpment on the eastern side of the city. Notable regions of Perth include the Mundaring area to the east, Joondalup on the city's northern side, and Mandurah to the south.

The southern side of Perth is a much more residential district and just a short distance from the city centre, being connected by Narrows Bridge and regular ferries across the river.
